Blog is moving!

Hello everyone!

I know I wrote a little while ago, pondering the future of this blog in it’s current incarnation (with the poorness of the Kooky Kat and struggles to keep the shop etc updated as I had initially planned).

As a result, I’ve ported all of the content over to a new address – but all of the historical stuff will still stay here to view – although you will be able to see it all on the new blog anyway.

I know it will be a faff for anyone who follows me and links to me from their blog to update their bookmarks, but I think it’s the most sensible step moving forward and would appreciate it very much if everyone would kindly do so 🙂

The new address is http://azzymakes.wordpress.com

As always I have the worst timing, but I hope everyone reading has had a good 2011 and I wish you all the best for 2012!

Thoughts on the shop

So when I kicked off this blog in its new incarnation I went all-out and put together a little Etsy shop where I was going to sell handspun and handknits etc. For one reason or another, things haven’t really worked out as planned. Work, time and other things have conspired against me to leave the shop almost always empty.

Also, the Kooky Kat after whom this blog and the shop are named is very very poorly. She has a massive tumour on her mammary gland (kitty breast cancer) and while we haven’t opted for surgery in the hope of not leaving her in massive pain towards the end of her life (plus chances of success not great) – she doesn’t have long left.

For now, I have closed the Etsy store temporarily and will update content on the blog to reflect the lack of store. I will debate whether to close it permanently and also consider changing the name of the blog – if the store and the whole initial ethos behind this blog isn’t in place, it probably makes sense to change it.

It won’t stop me selling anything – I’ll be able to put items up on here for sale if I ever have anything finished that I think others might be interested in. It may also make it a little easier to expand the scope of the blog a little – although the focus will still be predominantly on crafting etc.

I guess mostly I’m chickening out – once Kooky is no longer with us I don’t want to see reminders of her every day – so will give it some thought and decide what to do.

In the meantime we are very glad to have whatever time is left with she-of-the-giant-paws:

My store is live!

That’s right – my Etsy store, Kooky Kat Kreations is finally up and running.

Here’s a quick photo of some of the first handspuns to go into my shop – there’s also some handmade items in there too.

First shop handspun!

Any feedback or suggestions will be very welcome! Glad to be finally up and running. To get to my store you can either click on the link above, or go to the Shop tab at the top of the blog and get there that way.

Shop nearly ready!

The great moment is nearly upon us – where my online store will be up and running!

Spent the evening tonight working out postage prices, fees, updating policies for my store, all sorts. All that’s left to do now is whack some stuff in there! I’ll do that this weekend once I can take some better, more consistent photos of my stuff. I also need to order some postbags, but I can panic about that if and when people start buying stuff! (I kid, I kid – I will get some asap).

Feels like it’s finally coming on! There may also be hand-dyed yarn and fibre appearing in the future too. Trev has taken a bit of an interest in dyeing – as he’s infinitely more creative and colour-minded than I am, we could be onto a winner. He’ll be going to a workshop in a few weeks and we’ll see how that goes.

In case it goes well, what kinds of base blends, or colours would you like to see in your hand-dyed yarns and fibres? Really interested to see what would be popular!

Linky to the store to come this weekend 🙂

Kooky Kat Kreations is off to a good start this weekend! My Mini Moo cards arrived – these are cards I had created so I can attach them to skeins of handspun. They look amazing:

I hope this furry little visage will come to be quite well-known in time. The cards have also given me a theme for a colour-scheme when selling and packaging items. I’ve already ordered some stickers, along the same theme, to use to hold tissue paper wrapped around something. The tissue paper of course, is going to have to be orange – and that just remains to figure out what to do about bags. I need to look at postage bags and also at carriers, in case I sell handspun at any local events, etc. But I’ll show you the stickers when they turn up 🙂

So far, I have 3 skeins of handspun ready for sale and today I can add a fourth. You’ll recognise it as this project I’ve had in progress for the last month:

Yarn Yard - Red Squirrel - WIP

I give you, Red Squirrel – from the May 2009 Yarn Yard Fibre Club. It’s 75% superwash merino, 25% nylon. I was hoping to spin it up as laceweight – practising long draw. It was my second proper wheel project, although I know I have since finished numbers three and four already. The plying took an age (mainly because I kept putting off doing it), but here are the results:

Yarn Yard - Red Squirrel - FO

Yarn Yard - Red Squirrel - FO

Kinda happy with it – it’s lovely and soft and squooshable but I’m disappointed with the yardage. I was hoping to get to about 600 yards, but this is instead around 460, which is not slouchy by any standards. In terms of weight, it’s a light fingering or sock weight, aka heavy lace – would do lovely for a shawlette or a scarf. Unsure how it would do for socks as it’s a 2 ply, and not very tightly plied. Full specs:

Singles: approx 30wpi
Spun: supported long-draw
Plied yarn: 2 ply, using tensioned lazy kate
Finishing: warm water soak, snapping
Finished yarn: approx 20wpi, 465 yards, 101 grams

Spun on: Kromski Mazurka
Started: 22nd April 2010
Finished: 22nd May 2010

So I guess that the yardage isn’t bad considering the weight – it’s a similar thickness to some commercial sock yarn I’m knitting with at the moment, so it’s only not as long because I didn’t spin it thin enough – which will come with time. Weird, because I find it so easy to spin thin on my spindles. Gonna take practice, I guess.

So that’s 3 skeins in a couple of weeks – and I’m over a third of the way through singles for another. It’s nice to be able to get through some of my outstanding WIPs, and free up the wheel and spindles for projects I can do without feeling guilty. I’ve got some lovely luxurious fibres I want to spin… 50g here, 50g there, all of which would be perfect spindle projects – but since spindling takes me longer, I want to churn out some other stuff first so I can make a dent in my stash.

Once I’ve spun up a few more skeins, I’ll do a family photo of the yarn that’s going up for sale – so if anyone wants to snaffle some they can.

Watch this space!

Gone and done it!

Well I’m now officially migrated. I’ve put up a post on my old Blogger blog, announcing that as of now, Azzy’s Crochet is no more, and we are now Kooky Kat Kreations.

I’m still Azzy, or Azzywazzy for Twitter, Flickr, Ravelry, buying stuff on Etsy… anything that’s ME related. However now for pattern selling, or creating handspun or talking about crafting, I’m going to be Kooky Kat Kreations. In the next few weeks I’m going to buy the domain, so I’ll be http://www.KookyKatKreations.com, which is where this blog will then live.

Please adjust your links, to point here as I’ll only be updating this blog from now on.

Welcome!

I’ve come to a point where I need to make a decision. I’ve decided to start up a little venture where I’m going to sell handmade items – be it handspun, hand knits, dyed items… patterns… no idea.

To this end, I’ve set up a new email address on Gmail and created some cards I can hand out and attach to items I’m selling. I may also buy the domain name and set up an Etsy store… all things to think about! What I can’t decide is what to do about my blog. I quite like this blog. I’ve had it for a few years now, and even though it isn’t all about crochet anymore (hasn’t been for a while really), it’s quite representative of who I am.

I need to figure out whether I want to leave this blog here as it is, or port it over to the new name. Never mind the whole hassle of hosting…

Advice? Tips?
